Quraany (قرآني) is a free Qur'an app built around the printed Madinah mushaf, with all 604 pages drawn exactly as they are printed. It also listens: recite a page and «راجع تلاوتي» marks each word as you say it, or recite a few words and «ابحث بصوتي» finds the verse. Around the mushaf are 13 complete recitations, five study books, bookmarks and notes, khatma planning, azkar, prayer times and the qibla.

Yes, it is free. There is no price, no in-app purchase, no subscription, no locked feature and no advertising. This isn't a launch offer: the speech recogniser at the heart of the app is licensed on the condition that nothing it powers is ever charged for or funded by ads, so the app stays free for as long as it carries that recogniser.

No. Quraany has no accounts, no sign-in and no sync. Open it and start reading; everything you set, mark or write stays in the app on your device.

The app's menus and screens are in Arabic and English; you choose one when you first open it and can change it any time in Settings › General › Language. The mushaf and its words always stay in Arabic. The study books include the Saheeh International English translation; the tafsir and the word studies are in Arabic.

Almost everything does. The mushaf, its text, the five books, the azkar, the speech recogniser, the adhan recordings and the city list are installed with the app, so reading, navigating, checking your recitation, voice search, your sessions, prayer times and the qibla all work offline. You need a connection only to download recitation audio (a saved surah then plays offline) and to hear a single word read aloud when reviewing a session.

Because it carries everything it needs to work offline: both printings of all 604 pages as images, the complete text with its divisions, the five study books, the on-device speech recogniser, adhan recordings from twelve muezzins and a list of some 34,000 cities for prayer times. Nothing of that is fetched later. The first time you open it, the app takes a few moments to prepare the mushaf. Recitation audio isn't included; you download only the surahs you want.

Android phones and tablets on Android 7.0 or later, iPhone and iPad on iOS 15.0 or later, and Mac on macOS 12 or later. There is no Windows or web version yet; a Windows version is planned.

On Android and iPhone, the store version of Quraany doesn't open on a rooted or jailbroken device, on an emulator, or on an Android phone with Developer options switched on. This protects the mushaf and the app's content. If Developer options are the cause, switch them off in your device's settings, then tap «أعد الفحص» (Check again). Devices with a modified system aren't supported.

Yes, on Android and iPhone there are two. «أوقات الصلاة» (Prayer times) shows the day's six times, the Hijri date and a countdown to the next prayer. «المناسبات» (Occasions) shows the coming occasions in the Islamic calendar and how far off each one is. If a widget asks you to open the app, open it once and the widget refreshes. On Mac, the countdown to the next prayer sits in the menu bar instead.

So the adhan and your reminders keep their times. Closing the window, or pressing ⌘Q, leaves Quraany in the menu bar with a countdown to the next prayer; click it to see the day's times. To quit completely, right-click the menu-bar item, or open the «المزيد» (More) menu in its panel, and choose «إنهاء» (Quit). You can also turn on «الفتح مع بدء التشغيل» (Open at startup) in Settings › General so it's waiting there after you log in.

The Madinah mushaf, in the narration of Hafs from 'Asim: 604 pages drawn as they are printed, with their surah bands and quarter marks. The pages are images of the print rather than retyped text, and every word has its own position on the page, which is what lets the app follow and mark a recitation word by word.

Two printings of the Madinah mushaf are built in, and the app uses the one that suits the screen. Phones use «مصحف المدينة ٣ المُحسَّن», a narrower page that sets the same fifteen lines larger; tablets and Macs use the standard «مصحف المدينة ٣». Every word sits on the same page and line in both, so page, juz and hizb numbers match whichever one you're reading.

The pages are the printed pages, drawn to fit your screen, so there's no font-size setting and no pinch-to-zoom. On phones the app already uses the printing made for small screens, which sets the lines larger. A bigger screen, such as a tablet, shows the page larger still.

Yes. When the screen is wide enough to show two pages at full height, such as a tablet held sideways or a wide Mac window, the mushaf opens into two facing pages with a spine between them. A phone keeps one page whichever way you hold it, because two pages would be too small to read. With a keyboard, the arrow keys turn the pages.

The bar at the bottom of the mushaf shows where you are four ways at once: surah, page, juz and hizb, down to the quarter. Tap any of them to open its picker. Surahs can be found by name or number, and the search forgives spelling: «الفاتحه» finds «الفاتحة», and «18» or «١٨» finds Al-Kahf. The page picker is a ruler you slide across the whole mushaf, with the start of each juz marked.

Not in this version; there's no typed search of the Qur'anic text. To find a verse, recite a few words of it with «ابحث بصوتي» (Search by voice) and the mushaf opens on it. You can also go straight to any surah, page, juz or hizb from the bar at the bottom of the page.

Yes. The app opens on its dashboard, where the «تابع القراءة» (Continue reading) card names where you left the mushaf and takes you straight back. To keep a particular place on purpose, set the «القراءة» (Reading) bookmark on it.

Yes. In Settings › Display, «الإضاءة» (Lighting) can be Light, Dark or Automatic, which follows your device. «الوضع الورقي» (Paper mode) swaps the colours for quiet grey ink on a paper surface, which is easier on the eyes over a long sitting, and it works in either lighting.

Open the page you want to recite, choose «راجع تلاوتي» from the listening menu, and start reading aloud from any verse on the page; after two or three words the app knows where you began. Each word is marked as you say it, with a running tally at the top, and when you reach the end of the page it turns the page and keeps listening. When you end the check, the session is saved in «جلساتي» (My sessions).

No to both. The speech recogniser is installed with the app and runs on your device, so «راجع تلاوتي» and «ابحث بصوتي» work offline and nothing you recite is sent anywhere. «راجع تلاوتي» does keep a recording of each session on your device, so you can listen back in «جلساتي»; it stays until you delete that session. Voice search keeps no recording.

«صحيحة» (Correct): the word reached the app as written. «قريبة» (Close): it was recognisably the right word, but something differed, such as a vowel, a shadda, a madd's length, or one letter in a longer word. «راجعها» (Check it): the app heard a different word, or nothing where that word should be. Tap any marked word to read, in plain sentences, what it heard against what is written, and to hear the word recited correctly (playing the word needs an internet connection).

It can flag seven things: letters, vowels (fatha, damma, kasra), whether a madd is there, shadda, the length of a madd (two, four or six counts), qalqala, and ghunna and ikhfa'. «مُيسّر» (Gentle) checks letters, vowels and whether a madd is there, and overlooks the other four. «مُشدّد» (Strict) checks all seven. «مُخصَّص» (Custom) always checks the first three and lets you switch the other four on or off. Choose in Settings › Recitation checking.

No. It is a practice aid, and it says so about itself on screen: «قد أخطئ في التصحيح، ولا أُغني عن شيخ يسمع منك» (“I can get the checking wrong, and I am no substitute for a teacher who listens to you”). It can miss a mistake, and it can mark a word you recited correctly. Keep reciting to a qualified teacher.

The recogniser can mishear, especially with background noise, when the device is far from you, or when you read very fast. Recite in a quiet place, close to your device, at a steady pace, and tap the word to see what the app heard. If marks about shadda, madd length, qalqala or ghunna aren't useful to you, switch to «مُيسّر» (Gentle). If a mark still looks wrong, tell us through Contact us with the surah, the page and the word.

Yes. Every check is saved in «جلساتي» (My sessions), showing the verse it began at, how long it lasted and its tally. Open one and its marks return to the page while your own recording plays, with the highlight following along; tap a marked word to jump to the moment you said it. The list shows how much space the recordings take (about 2 MB per minute), and a session is removed only when you delete it, together with its recording.

Choose «ابحث بصوتي» (Search by voice) from the listening menu and recite a few whole words of any verse. The app searches the whole mushaf on your device and opens the page at that verse. If it isn't sure, it lists the closest verses for you to choose from rather than guessing. It works without internet.

Thirteen complete recitations by ten reciters, all in the narration of Hafs from 'Asim. Murattal recitations by AbdulBaset AbdulSamad, Abdur-Rahman as-Sudais, Abu Bakr al-Shatri, Hani ar-Rifai, Mahmoud Khalil al-Husary, Mishary Rashid Alafasy, Mohamed Siddiq al-Minshawi, Saud ash-Shuraym, Yasser al-Dossary and Khalifa al-Tunaiji; a mujawwad recitation by AbdulBaset AbdulSamad; a mu'allim (teaching) recitation by al-Husary; and a recitation by al-Minshawi recorded for children to repeat after. Choose one in Settings › Recitation.

Yes. Recitations aren't built into the app: a surah plays once it has been downloaded, and from then on it plays offline. When you press play on a surah you don't have yet, the app offers to download it and shows its size first. From Settings › Recitation you can download several surahs or all of them at once, and delete a single surah or a whole recitation to free space. All 114 surahs take from under 1 GB to about 3 GB, depending on the recitation.

Yes. Tap a word on the page, then press the play mark, «استمع من هنا» (Listen from here), in the bar at the top: the recitation starts from that word, not from the start of the surah. The highlight follows the recitation word by word, and the page turns by itself when the recitation reaches the next page. While it plays, tap any word to move the recitation there.

In Settings › Player: «تكرار الآية» (Verse repeat) plays each verse from once up to ten times before moving on; «سرعة التلاوة» (Recitation speed) can be Slow, Normal or Fast; and «وقت الترديد» (Time to repeat) leaves a silence after each verse as long as the verse itself, so you can recite it back. There are also recitations made for learning: al-Husary's mu'allim (teaching) recitation, and al-Minshawi's recitation for children to repeat after.

Yes. It keeps playing when you switch to another app or lock the screen, and you can control it from the lock screen and from its notification.

Five books, all on your device: «التفسير الميسر» (Al-Tafsir al-Muyassar), verse by verse; the Saheeh International English translation; «إعراب القرآن الكريم», the grammatical analysis of each word; «معاني الكلمات», the meaning of each word; and «تصريف كلمات القرآن», the morphology of each word. Press and hold a word to open them, switch between that word and the whole verse, and use the arrows to step through the mushaf a word or a verse at a time.

There are two: «القراءة» (Reading) for where you are reading and «الحفظ» (Memorising) for where you are memorising. Tap a word, choose «ضع فاصلاً» (Add a bookmark), and pick which one to place on that verse; each is a single place that simply moves when you set it again. Each is drawn on the page in its own colour, and a verse carrying both wears both. You'll find them under «الفواصل» (Bookmarks) and on the dashboard.

Yes. Tap a word, choose «أضف خاطرة» (Add a note), and write it on the whole verse or on that single word. The note is marked on the page where you wrote it. All your notes are gathered under «الخواطر» (Notes), where you can search them by what you wrote, by surah name or by verse number, with Arabic matching that forgives spelling.

Yes, in two forms. «صورة» (Image) sets the verses on a card in the mushaf's Uthmani script; «نص» (Text) sends them written out, so they can be pasted and searched, and can also be copied. Choose the first and last verse before sharing. A zikr from «الأذكار» can be shared as text too.

Yes, in two ways. Give a bookmark a reminder: pick a time and the days of the week (no particular day means every day), and your device reminds you where you left that bookmark, whether or not you've opened the app since. A khatma can also remind you of «وردك اليوم» (Today's portion) at the time and on the days you choose. Allow notifications for Quraany when your device asks.

Open «الختمات» (Khatmas) and add a new khatma. Name it, choose where it starts and ends, by juz or by page, and set the size of each portion: a juz, a hizb or a quarter for a range in juz, or a number of pages for a range in pages. The app divides the range into sittings, one portion each, shows your progress on the dashboard, and can remind you at the time you choose. While you read a portion, everything outside it is faded on the page, so you can see where to stop. You can keep more than one khatma.

The plan follows you. When you finish a sitting, press «أنهيت الورد» (Portion read): the whole portion counts as read, and the sittings still ahead are re-dated from today, whether you were early or late. If you need to stop partway, «إيقاف مؤقت» (Pause) saves your place without counting the portion, and «تابِع الورد» (Continue portion) brings you back to it.

345 azkar under the 135 occasions of «حصن المسلم» (Hisn al-Muslim), in the book's own order: waking, dressing, the mosque, the prayer, sleep, travel, rain, illness, «الرقية الشرعية» and more. The search forgives spelling. Open an occasion and it fills the screen one zikr at a time: tap anywhere on the screen after each time you say it, so the count stays under your thumb. Press the heart to keep a zikr in your favourites, and share any zikr as text.

Yes, on your device only. The azkar list marks the occasions you've finished today, and the dashboard's «أذكار هذا الوقت» (Azkar for this hour) card offers the morning, evening, after-prayer or sleep azkar that fit the time, going by your prayer times. «إحصائيات» (Statistics) shows how many you've read today, how many over the last ninety days, and your week at a glance.

They're worked out on your device from your location. The app shows Fajr, sunrise, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib and Isha, plus the middle and the last third of the night. There are 23 calculation methods, including Umm al-Qura, the Muslim World League, the Egyptian General Authority of Survey and ISNA; the app picks the one used in your country and tells you so, and you can change it. In Settings › Prayer times you can also set the madhab for Asr, adjust each prayer by up to 30 minutes to agree with your mosque, and choose rules for high latitudes.

No. «موقعي الحالي» (Use my location) needs only an approximate location, which is worked out on your device and never sent anywhere. If you'd rather not, use «اختر مدينة» (Choose a city) to search a list of some 34,000 cities in Arabic or English, by city or by country name. The list is inside the app, and each city carries its own time zone, so the times follow that city's clock.

Yes. Once your place is set, the adhan alert is on for all five prayers; tap the bell beside a prayer, on the prayer times screen or in Settings › Prayer times, to turn it off or back on. In Settings › Prayer times you can also choose the muezzin from twelve adhan recordings and listen to each first; at the prayer time, the notification plays a short excerpt of that adhan. You can add an early reminder 5, 10 or 15 minutes before, in your device's usual notification sound, and the adhan still comes on time. Quraany needs your permission to send notifications.

No. They're scheduled with your device in advance, so they arrive while the app is closed and after a restart. Prayer alerts are scheduled a few days ahead, up to ten days on Android and three to five days on iPhone and Mac, where the system limits how many notifications can wait, and the app tops them up whenever you open it. So open Quraany every few days. On a Mac, «الفتح مع بدء التشغيل» (Open at startup) keeps it waiting in the menu bar so the times stay set.

On Android and iPhone, «القبلة» (Qibla) uses your device's compass: it tells you to turn right or left until you're facing the qibla, and shows the direction from true north, corrected for magnetic declination, and the distance to the Kaaba in kilometres. If the pointer wanders, move the device in a figure eight, away from metal. A Mac has no compass, so the dial is drawn with north at the top and the qibla at its angle from north. Your location stays on your device.

Yes. In Settings › General, «ضبط التاريخ الهجري» (Hijri date adjustment) moves the date up to two days ahead or behind. The Hijri date on the dashboard, the occasions screen and the home screen widgets all follow it.

No. The app has no account, no analytics or telemetry, no advertising and no tracking of any kind, and we have no server that receives anything from it. Your recitation is processed on your device. The only requests the app makes are to download the recitations you choose and to play single words, and they ask for nothing but the file. This website is different: it uses Google Analytics to count visits, as our privacy policy explains.

Three, each only when a feature needs it. The microphone, for «راجع تلاوتي» and «ابحث بصوتي»; if you decline, the rest of the app still works. Location, only approximate, to work out prayer times and the qibla; you can choose a city instead. Notifications, to deliver the adhan and the reminders you set.

They're kept only in the app on your device. There's no account, sync or export, so there's no copy with us to restore, and uninstalling the app removes them. Whether your device's own backup or phone-to-phone transfer carries app data across depends on your device and its settings.
