1.The Qur'anic text and the printed pages

The app reads from the published pages of the Madinah mushaf, in two printings, together with the verse and word text of the Hafs 'an 'Aasim narration and the standard juz, hizb and rub divisions.

The text is installed with the app rather than fetched, so what you read cannot be altered in transit. If you find any discrepancy, please tell us through the contact page.

3.The recitations

Thirteen complete recitations from ten reciters, all in the Hafs 'an 'Aasim narration: Abdul Basit Abdus-Samad, Abdurrahman As-Sudais, Abu Bakr Al-Shatri, Hani Ar-Rifai, Mahmoud Khalil Al-Husary, Mishary Rashid Al-Afasy, Mohamed Siddiq Al-Minshawi, Sa'ud Ash-Shuraym, Yasser Ad-Dossari and Khalifah Al-Tunaiji.

The recordings are streamed and cached from the Quran.com content network at your request, and each remains the work of its reciter and its publisher.

4.GeoNames — city and country data

Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0).

What it is used for

The offline gazetteer of 34,124 cities in 252 countries that lets you choose a place for prayer times and qibla without a network. Each city carries its own IANA time zone. The search is a query against a file on your device — no geocoding service is called, and nothing you type leaves the phone.

5.The speech recogniser

Recitation checking and voice search are both done by a Qur'anic acoustic model that is installed with the app and runs on your device. It is licensed to us on a no-profit basis, and that licence is why the app carries no purchase, subscription, paywall or advertising, and why its checking must always be presented as fallible rather than authoritative.

Licence

GNU Lesser General Public License, version 3.0 (LGPL-3.0). It is linked dynamically.

What it is used for

Re-encoding downloaded recitation audio to a constant bit rate, which is what makes seeking to an individual word exact.
